We live in a world of RIGHT NOW!
We send an email and we expect a response returned quickly. We have text, bbm, facebook, face time and a variety of other platforms supporting this right now mentality. We can export pictures and pick them up printed on mugs the next day. We can order anything online and it will magically appear on our doorstep within days. We can google information in the blink of an eye, and we have endless knowledge at our fingertips BUT there are some things in this life that are worth waiting for and worth the time, tenacity and learning put into them.

It’s February and the 90 day challenges have started. Firstly, let me say that BUC does not endorse or promote any meal replacement plans. Anyone who has ever worked with me understands how passionate I am about this. I am VERY particular who I throw my support behind.  I take the responsibility I have to the clients who trust me, look to me for my opinion and guidance very seriously. I won’t suggest taking anything I haven’t already tried myself, and I generally don’t refer to other professionals if I haven’t worked with them personally. I am fortunate to have surrounded myself with amazing colleagues and local businesses and am confident in my recommendations. Having said that; I am NOT saying that these meal replacement products are bad or bad for you. I am simply saying that I do not endorse any program that encourages you to drink your meals once or twice per day. Supplements by definition are to be supplemental ... meaning they are NOT REAL FOOD. I am a realist and completely understand that some times and some days a protein shake or bar can come in handy, but that does not mean that you stop trying to do better with real food. These supplemental products are meant for emergency use NOT TO REPLACE the real food you should be eating! For example, if you couldn’t make it to the gym one day because life got in the way, would that mean that the next day you just say screw it as well? Of course not! (well maybe some of you but that is a blog for another day!)

The issue I have with these 90 day programs are as follows. They put you in the mind set of dieting (and don’t blow smoke up my butt and tell me they don’t). For the majority of the population using them are doing so because they want to lose weight and the only way they know to do this is to diet or look for the next quick and easy fix. So they start on their shakes. Of course, if they are going to commit to the 90 days and spend money on a product they also commit to following the provided meal plan. Enter the mindset of lack... no room for anything outside of the plan because you are committed. SO what happens at the end of 90 days?? Well, you look fricken fabulous of course!! Who wouldn’t after 90 days of eating healthy and having 2 low calorie shakes? You have put yourself in a caloric deficit and if you combined it with exercise as well, voila! Success!! You feel awesome. You are rock’n a new body but pretty soon reality sets in. ANYONE can stick to something for 90 days but THEN WHAT?? They start to realize it sucks to drink your food AND it is no longer satisfying thier cravings. 90 days is a long time to give up things like peanut butter, a glass of wine or even being able to eat out without sticking to veggies and chicken (and hold the dressing please). Enter real life and the food tantrum. HOLY HANNA! It’s like you have never seen a piece of cake before and the flavour in your mouth is euphoric... you binge, hate yourself the next day, vow to get back on the wagon, manage another few days with shakes but the picking has begun and repeat and repeat and repeat. Real food, real life is just too darn good. Now you hate yourself because your kick ass body is a thing of the past and the voice in your head says you only have yourself to blame… hhhmm if you were an emotional eater before the 90 days hold onto your comfort food batman! As time goes on you give up on getting back on the wagon because you can’t even see the damn thing in the distance. Sound familiar? Think this time will be different? Think this plan has something unique? Think again. New year, new fad. SAME SAME!!

Here are the cold hard facts. There are NO short cuts to a fit fantastic body. Food, real food and lots of it, is part of the answer, along with time and tenacity. You MUST let go of the “I want it NOW” mentality. If you want to change your body in 90 days commit to doing it the right way and really give food 100% of your focus. Learn how to manipulate and understand proteins, fats and carbohydrates and commit to doing what you need to, the right way. I did not achieve a fit healthy body overnight. I did not maintain a healthy body weight during pregnancy by filling myself full of shakes (side note if you won’t eat it when you are pregnant should you really eat it when you are not?? Same not goes for kids. Would you feed your kids 2 shakes per day?? If you don’t think it would be good for them, what makes it good for you???.. oh I digress…) I made a commitment to myself years ago and DID NOT STOP the pursuit of my own personal physique goals. I studied, worked with coaches and put in the time in the kitchen and in the gym. Behind every overnight success story (in the eyes of the public) are YEARS of hard work and dedication to achieving better. This journey will not be easy but the lessons are yours to hold and WORK at for a lifetime. YES, you will have times where you choose to have some wine or cake or whatever tickles your taste buds BUT you will make these choices empowered by knowledge.  I can't imagine a life of always feeling deprived of these foods. If you stall getting back up, it’s not because you don’t know what you need to do, it is simply because you ARE NOT READY TO DO IT! Who the heck wakes up and wants to work their ass off in the kitchen and in the gym to lose unwanted weight?? FYI, this is a learned behaviour (insert time and tenacity variables here.) Decide that the longer road is the right road..... and be thankful that surgeons, lawyers, doctors and the other professionals who run our country don’t have an easy button to get fast tracked in to a job. Would you want a Dr. operating on you who got his certificate in 90 days? Aren’t YOU WORTH the time and effort?

It’s time you learn how to E.A.T!

Join the next 10 week Foundations! class starting in April and start a journey of true nutrition. Lose weight the right way through knowledge, and application. No short cuts here but I KNOW you are worth it!
